The manner in which the Internet is used to find information has created a disproportionate value for certain names, meaning that many have been sold for very high figures indeed. This can work as a prime name, possibly the brand name of an organization, and also as a feeder name with a second site driving information to the first.

Prior to the creation of Exname, there was no organized exchange function where the value could be traded.

Christina Stevens was as a Founder Member and Shareholder of Businessnet Limited, UKs first B2B Internet Service Provider which was sold to Level 3 Communications Incorporated as their London Gateway in 1999. As an Associate Registrar, Christina also has her own business, Koala Systems, and has been providing Domain Name Services for a number of years. In addition she is also the Company Secretary of Comdaq Limited, a company specializing in Exchange based Trading, Negotiation and Settlement software.

After extensive research on the buying and selling of Domain Names in the Secondary Market, Christina came to the conclusion that the current platforms were very manual, labor intensive and expensive for both the operator and the end user. The current methods also did nothing to aid transparency, liquidity and help form a proper market in Secondary Domain Names.

She decided to set up Exname LLC and adapt Comdaqs Trading and Negotiation software. She approached Escrow. Com to handle the Settlement and Payment. This together with her knowledge of Domain Names plus the technical and commercial experience gained from the launch and successful sale of Businessnet Limited, made her feel that Exname could offer the Secondary Domain Name Market a more efficient and cheaper alternative than was currently available.

The Company was formed in Delaware on 10th September 2003 and the bank account set up with Smith Barney in New York on 23rd September 2003. From 10th September,2003 the software has been rewritten and the website produced by Comdaqs software engineers in Pune, India.

The site opened for pre-registration on 18th March 2004 and immediately attracted a great deal of interest with its Membership and number of Sell Offers steadily increasing.

The site went to full trading on 18th April 2004 and the business has continued to build. Currently the Membership is just under 300 and the number of Sell Offers has exceeded 2000. A Company Policy decision was made from the outset that the Exchange would not list any Name it considered to be either offensive or pornographic. This policy is being constantly challenged but the interest and quality of Names being placed for sale is an indication that the stand on this issue is understood and appreciated.

In addition to Technical, the Marketing, Administration and Member Support resources are also based in Pune, India with Christina overseeing the whole project from her base in Spain.

Exname is now actively looking for partners, particularly Domain Name Registrars who currently do not have a Secondary Market portal, or to sell the concept and company completely.
